Child Care Program Toddler Program
Ages (12
to 30 months)
Child to Teacher Ratio (5 children for 1 teacher)
Group Size: Maximum 15 children (3 may be 12-18 months)
Welcome
to our Toddler Program!
We offer a nurturing,
loving environment for the children. We help to develop self-confidence
and curiosity through songs, learning centres, creative activities and
play.
We strive to provide
a program that is geared towards helping our children develop habits
of observation, questioning and listening. We assist and encourage the
children to develop an awareness of their own feelings and ways to channel
strong feelings into positive means of expression. The children learn
that they are free to make choices. As long as the children demonstrate
respect and consideration for other people and things, they do not always
have to conform. Flexible programming like ours prepares children to
utilize their intellectual and creative abilities in future learning
tasks.
Toddler
Goals:
- Encourage social
skills (mutual respect, sharing & turn-taking, manners)
- Promote self-help
skills (sitting and using spoon and cup at the table: putting on and
taking off shoes; tidying toys when finished with them)
- Encourage healthy
habits (washing hands)
- Positive self-awareness
- Fine motor skills
(tidying toys, peg puzzles, holding utensils, colouring with crayons)
- Gross motor skills
(climbing, kicking, throwing)
- Recognizing colours/basic
objects
- Stimulating speech
by repeating and modeling
Our indoor activity
area is a bright and cheery sunlit room. Our washroom/toileting area
is located within our room which allows the transition to toilet-training
to be easier.
Toys and learning
tools are changed at least weekly. A program plan which outlines the
daily theme-based activities is posted in the activity area on a weekly
basis. A monthly calendar of activities is provided for every family
in advance.
Our outdoor activity
area is a fenced grassy area with two sandboxes, a playhouse, child-sized
picnic tables, and a paving stone path around the outside for endless
play on riding toys (trikes, cars, wagons, etc.). The grassed area offers
space for tunnels, rocking toys, sprinkler fun, snow sculptures, etc..
During inclement weather, activities may be brought indoors to encourage
imagination.

Children
arrive and are in a family-grouping situation. Staff welcomes each child
and family and find out how the child's day has started. If there are
any questions the staff will try to address it as quickly as they can.
A breakfast program is offered until 7:45.
The toddlers move to their room around 8:00am and diapers are checked.
The toddler room is all abuzz. The children are involved in self-chosen
activities and some special one on one time with the staff. Staff is
assessing the needs of the toddler room at this time.
Snack time has arrived and the toddlers wash their hands and sit at
the table. We have a great variety of snacks offered (Our menu is posted
on the wall in each playroom and is provided in the parent handbook).
Following snack we clean up, check diapers and sunscreen is applied
(April-Oct) in preparation for outdoor time.
A theme-based circle with stories, songs and activities happens at this
time.
The toddlers are preparing to go outside. We are working on self-help
skills during this time. Indoor shoes are removed and outdoor clothing
is put on. Each child is encouraged to try to participate and given
positive reinforcement throughout this time.
Outside time...a favourite for all. With a variety of gross motor and
fine motor activities (balls, bikes, various riding toys, sand toys
and our fabulous climber) the toddlers are kept busy at this time. Staff
monitor and join in the activities.
A busy indoor time for the toddlers! A theme-based creative activity
and a variety of activity centres are offered throughout the room (gross
motor, fine motor, dramatic play, sensory play and other theme-related
activities).
Toddlers are taken to the washroom to be changed, sit on potties and
wash our hands for lunch. When the families are ready, we will take
extra time for our toddlers to visit the washroom.
We then sit at the tables for lunch. A bib is given to each child and
lunch is served. Children are encouraged to use their manners at this
time. Staff sits with the children and we find this is a great time
for conversations between staff and children. We try to make this time
as relaxing and enjoyable as we can.
After lunch the children are washed and put onto their cots that are
placed around the room. A special sleep toy or blanket can help your
child to settle for rest time.
Rest time for children. Staff assists the children with rest time by
sitting with children and rubbing their backs while soft music is playing.
Children are awakened and taken to the washroom for diaper change, potties
and washing hands before snack.
Children sit at the table with staff and are offered snack and a drink.
A small song circle is offered after snack while sunscreen is applied
and children are preparing to go outside.
Weather permitting we have outside time. At this time parents are beginning
to arrive and are informed about the daily events. Children are given
the opportunity to say goodbye and parents gather child and belongings.
Children's diapers are checked and self-chosen indoor activities are
offered. Parents are arriving and the daycare closes at 6:00pm.
